Answers to FAQ

Q: How do I access my email, when I enter my username and password I see a message that says "Invalid Username or Password please try again".

A: If you are accessing your email through Webmail i.e. from the link on the home page of Aldwincle.net, please remember to prefix your user name with "Aldwincle-" e.g. if your username is "Joe" you should enter "Aldwincle-Joe".

To use another email program (e.g. Microsoft Outlook) you need to configure your email program correctly. The settings you need to configure are as follows:
  • Incoming (POP) Server: pop.firstbusinessweb.com
  • Outgoing (SMTP) Server: smtp.firstbusinessweb.com
  • User name: aldwincle-yourusername
  • Password: your password

Q: Is there anything I can do to help run Aldwincle.net?

A: Yes please! Like everybody else I never have enough time to do everything I'd like to - if you can help by keeping some of the content up to date that would be fantastic. You don't need to have any special technical skills as the website has been designed so that a number of people can be given editorial status and add information as easily as filling out a form. If you could spare a few minutes a week and have access to information that would enrich the website (church services, 200 club results, meeting minutes etc.) please drop me an email mike@aldwincle.net or call me on 720153. All offers of help will be greatly appreciated.

Q: How does shopping at Aldwincle.net make money for the Village and where does the money come from?

A: Like all the best ideas it's really very simple. It's far cheaper for a retailer to sell via the internet than through a traditional bricks and mortar shop - there's no rent to pay, no heating, lighting and no shop assistants to pay. Some retailers ONLY operate via the internet and because they have lower overheads they're able to offer lower prices. But before these retailers can make their websites work they need people to visit them and this is where they are prepared to pay commisions to other websites (like Aldwincle.net) that send customers to their sites. It all depends on the retailer but the commissions vary from 2% to 25% some examples are Debenhams 5%, John Lewis 7%, Dell 2%, Virgin Wines 5% - even Lycos (the search engine) will pay 2p everytime you do a search on Aldwincle.net.

It's also important to point out that you pay the same price whether you go through Aldwincle.net or not - all commissions are paid by the retailer and NOT by the shopper.

Q: I'd like to raise funds for the Village but I'm worried about giving out my credit card details online.

A: All of the retailers that we have arranged affiliate status with have been carefully selected and all operate approved secure links so that your credit card details are strongly encrypted during transmission to the retailer. When you shop you do so on the retailer website and Aldwincle.net is not party to any transactions therefore we do not see any of your card details. Finally most banks offer a guarantee against fraudulent use of your card over the internet so that, in the event of a problem, your bank will not hold you liable.

Q: I've got a good idea for the website, how do I go about getting it implemented?

A: Great! Aldwincle.net is a website for the village and it's important that new ideas are incorporated. If you have an idea you can either use the feedback form on the home page, drop an email to mike@aldwincle.net or call me on 720153.
